Trunks, chests, benches, footlockers, storage boxes…so many names…so many uses. They provide a way to stay organized, but if your not, they help you keep your junk hidden. They make great bench seating, coffee tables, storage chests, toy boxes, etc. I love these, not only for the great concealed storage they provide, but because they can easily be dressed up to suit any decor with very little DIY skills.

Here are a few of the ones that I have upcycled and repurposed:

This coffee table was made from one of my Dad’s military footlockers. It has a lot of added character because, like all of his footlockers, they were very used and abused over the years. To raise it up to coffee table height I added the legs to the bottom cut from pine board. Then dressed it up with paint and a simple diamond design. Like most of my furniture, it is in need of an updated painted color…I’ll get to it eventually.

To make this entertainment center, I removed the damaged lids from two footlockers, then turned and stacked them. I added a shelf to the top footlocker, for the components and cut enough of the back out for the cords. The doors on the bottom were made from reclaimed cedar fence pickets. The top has recently been expanded, using hard wood flooring scraps and brackets to accommodate a new and bigger TV…Men! When it comes to their TV’s, size does matter.

This trunk belonged to my Mom and was also very well used for many years. The top suffered a lot of damage, so I covered it with burlap and made a diamond design with twine. I also lined the inside with wallpaper. It works as a coffee table in the man-room but it’s also a great storage space for the murphy bed linens.

This moroccan style trunk was built from plywood shelving boards. I dressed it up by adding lattice boards and decorative tacks in the centers. I think what really makes it special is the big, rusty hardware. And you gotta love the big lock and key! (All ordered from Restoration Hardware).

My most recent upcycled footlocker was featured in my guest blog from a few weeks back.

These are just the ones that I have done so far, but there are more buried in my shed waiting to be upcycled and repurposed…I will get to them eventually.
